Nis Nissen has been a Florida business activist since the 1970s. He created Lakeland-based Nissen Advertising in 1971 after working as a partner in Pearson & Nissen. Clients included national retailers, hotel chains, insurance companies, governmental entities and international business-to-business companies. Nissen also served as chairman of FloridaFirst Bank, which is now Wells Fargo, and currently is active in banking and financial services, including serving on the board of 1st Portfolio Holding Corp. based in Northern Virginia and as a partner with Ategra Capital Management, an investment bank that specializes in community banks. Nissen also taught advertising and public relations as an adjunct professor at Florida Southern College for more than 20 years and has been a member of the Advertising Advisory Board at the University of Florida for the past 30 years. He has been involved in numerous civic activities, serving on the boards of directors of the Polk Museum of Art, Central Florida Speech & Hearing Center, Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill Industries and Lighthouse Ministries among others. He has been a member of the board of directors of RetailFirst Insurance Company since 1979.
